The position of County Auditor is filled by appointment by the State District Judges of Smith County for the term of two years. The County Auditor is the Chief Financial Officer of Smith County. The County Auditor's Office is here to safeguard the assets of Smith County and to help the County continue on the path toward a strong financial future. There are 9 full time assistant auditors. Divisions within the Auditor's Office include payroll processing, accounts payable, financial accounting and reporting, and internal auditing.
Role of the County Auditor's office:
- keeps the general accounting records;
- prepares financial reports;
- prescribes systems for the receipt and disbursement of the County;
- audits and processes accounting transactions for grants, payroll, accounts payable;
- verifies compliance with governing laws;
- performs statutory reviews of records maintained by other officials; and
- prepares annual revenue estimates and assists in the overall budget process.
