Poll Workers
Are you interested in becoming a poll worker?
During every election, we need people to work in three different capacities.
1. As judges (the person in charge) and clerks at the polling locations
2. As ballot board clerks (working with the absentee/mail in ballots)
3. In the Elections Administration office on Election Day to assist in answering phones, delivering supplies to the polling locations, and filling in when someone at a polling location cannot work
All poll workers and office workers need to be able to attend training, which we conduct a couple weeks prior to early voting beginning, and be able to watch about 1 1/2 hours of online videos. The videos can be watched in our office for those that do not have internet access but you need to make an appointment.
Anyone interested in working should fill out the Poll Worker Application and sent it to us by mail, email, fax, or in-person delivery. For any questions, feel free to call us or send an email.

Student Workers
High school students who are 16 years of age or older now have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process by serving as elections clerks at the polling place during Early Voting or on Election Day. A student who is at least 16 years of age and who is enrolled in a public or private high school or home school and has the consent of the principal (or parent/legal guardian in charge of education in home school) may serve as an election clerk. The elections officials must receive written authorization from the student's parent or guardian for the student to serve in the election for which he or she is appointed. If this is something you are interested in, submit the Student Worker Application and Permission Form to us by mail, email, fax, or in-person delivery. For any questions, feel free to call us or send an email.

SOS Training
The Secretary of State offers training for poll workers. This training covers the basics but does not go into details on the equipment that Smith County utilizes during an election. We offer in-person training classes for all poll workers; these classes focus mostly on the equipment and where and how supplies are packaged. These classes are not open to the public. For the Secretary of State's training, click the link below.
