Smith County Road Projects:
October 13, 2023: Paving is underway on Smith County Road 2191, also known as Oscar Burkett Road, southeast of Tyler. The road is not closed to drivers but traffic is slowed to one lane. The road runs north and south, crossing over Toll 49, and runs north to Brown Elementary School. Work is being done to reconstruct, widen and repave the road. The paving today is being done on the portion south of Toll 49.
September 5, 2023:
A portion of Smith County Road 452, also known as Old Dallas-Shreveport Road, in the northwest portion of the county, was closed Tuesday for a bridge replacement project. The portion of CR 452, from Farm-to-Market Road 1804 to FM 2710, will be closed for about three months so the wooden bridge can be replaced with a wider, safer concrete bridge, Smith County Engineer Frank Davis said. This is the first of six bridges in Smith County to be replaced through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Bridge Replacement Program. Detour signs are posted alerting drivers to take alternative routes.
July 6, 2023: A portion of County Road 370, also known as Howell Lake Road in Precinct 3, will be closed beginning Monday, July 10, so a bridge can be replaced. The concrete bridge with wooden piers, which runs over the private Howell Lake, will be replaced with a wider concrete bridge with concrete piles, Smith County Engineer Frank Davis said. Signs are up alerting drivers of the closure and drivers will need to take an alternate route. Work is being done by True Roads Construction and is expected to take about three months.
June 30, 2023: The reconstruction of County Road 3111 -- just south of Interstate 20 and west of Kilgore – has begun and is expected to take about three months. Road Improvements will be made to 4.25 miles of CR 3111, also known as Joy Wright Mountain Road, as well as CR 3118, 3119 and 3120. The roads are located in Precinct 3, and are part of the Smith County Road and Bridge Bond Program. Reynolds & Kay will reconstruct part of CR 3111, from its intersection with CR 3207, north to Interstate 20. The section of CR 3111, from FM 2767 to the Gregg County Line, will be improved by Smith County Road and Bridge crews once Reynolds & Kay is complete with their work. Work on the project includes widening, reconstructing and paving the roads, and is expected to cost $1,479,092.
June 30, 2023: Reconstruction of Smith County Road 285, also known as Old Omen Road, has been completed. It was the longest road project to-date using Smith County Road and Bridge Bond funding, and included 8.11 miles of CR 285, as well as smaller, residential roads 287, 2274 and 2275. CR 285 runs from Farm-to-Market Road 848, to near Lake Tyler, in Precinct 2. Work was done by Texana Land & Asphalt and included widening, stabilizing and repaving the roads. The project was paid for with Smith County Road Bond funding and cost $2,593,689.55, which came in under budget.
June 29, 2023: Two Smith County projects that are part of the Road and Bridge Bond Program have been completed. A project in Precinct 2 included County Roads 2222 and 2260, east of New Chapel Hill. Part of the roadwork to CR 2222 included adding a thicker layer of pavement because of heavy truck traffic on the cut-through roads, Smith County Engineer Frank Davis said. Work was done to CR 2222, starting from Farm-to-Market Road 850, south to CR 2260, which ends at CR 223. Texana Land & Asphalt reconstructed the 2.62 miles of roads for a cost of $956,370. CR 2212, also known as Surrey Trail, was recently completed. The road is just east of Tyler and south of Texas Highway 31 East, in Precinct 3. Reynolds & Kay reconstructed 0.7 miles of roadway in the residential neighborhood. The project included two streets and cost $247,435.
August 26, 2022: Several Smith County road projects were completed using bond funding. About 2.6 miles of County Road 178 (Old Palestine Road), outside of Flint, was widened, cement treated and asphalt overlaid. Texana Land & Asphalt was the contractor. Several residential streets just west of the City of Tyler were also improved using bond funding. Work to CR 1162 (Indian Drive and Choctaw Drive), 1188 and 1241 (Larry Lane and Ronald Road), was recently completed and included about 2 miles of roads. The contractor was True Roads Construction, LLC. Both projects came in under budget.
August 5, 2022: Smith County Road 285, also known as Old Omen Road, is back open to drivers! Work began in June to replace the old, narrow bridge with a longer, wider concrete bridge. The construction project is part of the Smith County Road and Bridge Bond Program, and Stateline Construction LLC, is the contractor on the project.
